Xbox will publish Kojima's Physint after... | Saudi PIF is said to be considering...

The week's biggest studio-politics story is Physint. Kojima Productions said it "unexpectedly received notice" in mid-June that PlayStation would cancel the action-espionage project announced as a PlayStation exclusive in 2024; Xbox is now the publisher, with CEO Asha Sharma calling the partnership a fit for the platform's next chapter. Bloomberg reports that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is considering combining EA โ€” which it took private last month in a $55 billion buyout โ€” with subsidiary Savvy Games Group once Savvy's $6 billion Moonton deal closes. On the player side, Bulkhead's WARDOGS crossed one million copies sold on day one of Steam Early Access and peaked above 300,000 concurrent players, even as launch servers buckled. Circana data says more than 40% of US players cancelling Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online now cite cost as the main reason. A consumer-rights wiki has logged 30-plus times Sony told shoppers they "own" digital games, after Sony's lawyers argued reasonable consumers already know they don't. Square Enix's Naoki Hamaguchi said shipping Final Fantasy VII Revelation fully on disc would mean compromising the final chapter. In Glasgow, Rockstar and the IWGB opened a tribunal over 31 sacked GTA 6 staff. European studios spent 63% more on external talent in 2025, Saber Interactive says it has "no real development in North America any more," Polyarc closed after 12 years, a GTA 6 Netflix preview drove more than 100,000 US sign-ups in six hours, and Nintendo of America launched a Customer Appreciation Sale amid a tariff-refund lawsuit.

Today's Summary

Editor's Viewpoint

The Physint handover is not just a win for Xbox. It is a public admission that even a Kojima-led exclusive can fail a publisher's internal math. PlayStation's statement is full of admiration and "continued close collaboration," which is a polite way of saying the relationship survives the project. Xbox's statement is the inverse: it will take the risk Sony no longer wants. That is how platform strategy actually looks in 2026 โ€” not as a race to lock every prestige name, but as a willingness to pick up the ones someone else has already priced out.

The same logic sits under the other big business stories. A PIF-backed merger of EA and Savvy would be about coordinating assets the fund already owns, not about discovering a new audience. Circana's cancellation data is even blunter: the people leaving Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online are increasingly leaving because the price no longer fits, not because the catalog suddenly got worse. Meanwhile WARDOGS sold a million copies in a day by telling players exactly what the game was not, refusing microtransactions in Early Access, and still nearly melting Steam. Demand is not gone. It is just refusing to subsidize the wrong bet.

That is why Polyarc's closure and Rockstar's tribunal belong in the same issue. One studio spent 12 years making beloved VR adventures and still could not convert a cancelled project into a second act. Another is in court over how it treated the people building the most expensive game on Earth. The industry can reallocate Physint, merge EA, and sell a million copies of a new shooter before lunch. It still has not figured out how to keep the middle of the talent pipeline intact.

Xbox will publish Kojima's Physint after PlayStation cancelled the project

Source: EurogamerDate: September 10, 2026Impact: Critical

Xbox will publish Kojima Productions' upcoming action-espionage game Physint after the studio "unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the Physint project" in mid-June. Hideo Kojima said the team was "determined to keep the project alive" and found in Xbox "a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future." The game had been announced as a PlayStation exclusive in 2024.

PlayStation said it made "the difficult decision to step away," while insisting the relationship "remains strong after three decades" and that it looks forward to future collaboration. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said creators "have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life" and that Kojima's ambition "reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox." Later reporting attributed Sony's exit to missed deadlines, a bloated budget, and weaker-than-hoped sales for Death Stranding 1 and 2 โ€” claims Sony has not confirmed in its public statement.

Key Points

  • Cancelled in June โ€” Kojima Productions said the PlayStation notice arrived unexpectedly in mid-June.
  • Xbox steps in โ€” The same publisher already backing Kojima's horror project OD now takes Physint.
  • Relationship language โ€” Sony still talks about "continued close collaboration" even as it walks away.
  • Exclusive no more โ€” A 2024 PlayStation exclusive is now an Xbox-published game.

Saudi PIF is said to be considering combining EA with Savvy Games Group

Source: PC GamerDate: September 11, 2026Impact: High

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is reportedly considering a merger of Electronic Arts and its subsidiary Savvy Games Group to "ensure better coordination between its assets," sources told Bloomberg. PIF led the $55 billion leveraged buyout that took EA private last month. Savvy's portfolio already includes Scopely, ESL Gaming, FaceIt, a $1 billion stake in Embracer, and holdings in Nintendo, Capcom, Nexon, Take-Two, and Koei Tecmo.

Sources said a combination is unlikely until Savvy completes its $6 billion acquisition of Chinese mobile publisher Moonton, announced in March. PIF and EA declined to comment; Savvy did not respond. When the EA buyout closed, the company told staff its "mission, values, and commitment to players" would remain unchanged and that it would "maintain creative control." A merger would put FIFA/EA Sports FC, Pokรฉmon Go via Scopely's orbit, and a stack of live-service and esports assets under one roof โ€” a coordination play more than a creative one.

Key Points

  • Unconfirmed โ€” Bloomberg sources; PIF and EA declined comment.
  • Timing โ€” Unlikely before Savvy's $6B Moonton deal closes.
  • Already the owner โ€” PIF took EA private last month in a $55B LBO.
  • Coordination, not discovery โ€” The pitch is aligning assets the fund already holds.

WARDOGS sells more than 1 million copies on day one of Early Access

Source: IGNDate: September 10, 2026Impact: High

Bulkhead's 100-player tactical shooter WARDOGS sold more than one million copies on its first day of Steam Early Access, and peaked above 300,000 concurrent players โ€” later tallies from publisher-side partner everplay put the launch-day concurrent figure above 340,000. CEO Joe Brammer called the result "mental," noting the studio had spent months telling players what the game was not, "and at one point literally gave everyone ten reasons not to buy it."

The launch was messy in the way huge multiplayer launches usually are. PC Gamer reported servers going down as more than 300,000 players rushed in, with Bulkhead taking systems offline to fix a problem that "wasn't present in the previous beta." Steam reviews sat at Mixed for a stretch because of queues. The commercial signal is still unmistakable: a $39.99 Early Access milsim with no in-game store just outsold most premium shooters' opening weekends, on PC only, with consoles not due until 2028.

Key Points

  • 1M+ on day one โ€” Confirmed by Bulkhead, IGN, and everplay's market notice.
  • 300kโ€“340k CCU โ€” Enough to briefly crack Steam's most-played list behind CS2 and Dota 2.
  • Servers buckled โ€” Launch queues and an emergency Steam-client hotfix.
  • No MTX in EA โ€” The studio sold a box price and asked people not to buy on hype.

BUSINESS ยท SUBSCRIPTIONS

More than 40% of subscription cancellations now blame rising costs

Source: EurogamerDate: September 11, 2026Impact: High

Circana senior director Mat Piscatella says cost is becoming a stronger driver of US cancellations of Xbox Game Pass Essential, PlayStation Plus Essential, and Nintendo Switch Online. "Over 40% of those canceling in the US cite cost as a primary driver, higher than seen in Q1," he wrote, based on Circana's Future of Insights for Video Games Consumer Survey.

The figure does not mean more people are cancelling overall โ€” only that among those who do, price has overtaken weaker catalogs as the stated reason. For Nintendo Switch Online, 50% of recent cancellers chose "Couldn't justify the cost of the subscription within my budget but liked the service," up from 40% earlier this year. Game Pass Essential and PS Plus Essential both sat around 40%. After a year of price hikes, cloud-hour caps, and overlapping catalogs, the subscription bundle is bumping into household budgets rather than discovery problems.

Key Points

  • 40%+ cite cost โ€” Higher than Circana's Q1 reading, US-only.
  • Not a volume claim โ€” Piscatella stressed this is about why people leave, not how many leave.
  • NSO at 50% โ€” Half of Nintendo cancellers still liked the service.
  • Essential tiers โ€” The cheapest Game Pass and PS Plus plans are not insulated.

A consumer-rights wiki is logging every time Sony said you "own" digital games

Source: EurogamerDate: September 11, 2026Impact: High

After Sony argued in court that "reasonable consumers" already know they do not own the digital goods they paid for, the Consumer Rights wiki published a non-exhaustive table of more than 30 occasions on which PlayStation's own site told customers they do. The list includes store and support copy along the lines of viewing a broadcast "for a game you own."

The catalog is a response to a class action alleging the PlayStation Store is not clear enough that a purchase is a revocable license. Sony's defense leans on small-print links to its Terms of Service and Software Product Licensing Agreement at checkout. The wiki's point is simpler: if reasonable consumers are supposed to know they don't own anything, Sony should stop using the word "own" in the shopping flow. That gap between marketing language and legal language is now exhibit A.

Key Points

  • 30+ examples โ€” Consumer Rights wiki compiled Sony pages that talk about owning digital games.
  • Class action context โ€” Filed after Sony's "reasonable consumers" argument last month.
  • License, not ownership โ€” Purchases remain revocable under the store's terms.
  • Own goal โ€” The company's public copy is now being used against its legal copy.

FF7 Revelation's director says a full-on-disc release would compromise the finale

Source: EurogamerDate: September 11, 2026Impact: Medium

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will ship in a physical edition on all three major consoles, but players still have to download extra data. Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi said a fully on-disc version would have meant "compromising the quality of the final chapter," which "would ultimately not be in the best interest of many fans."

"There is real value in being able to offer a physical edition at all," he added, framing the choice against "a disc-less future." Collectors were not soothed. Fans have already pointed out that other large 2026 releases found ways to ship more of the game on the disc, or used multiple discs. For Square Enix, the physical SKU is now a shelf presence and a collector object, not a complete offline copy of the game โ€” a distinction the company is no longer pretending otherwise about.

Key Points

  • Physical, but not complete โ€” A disc edition still requires a download.
  • Hamaguchi's line โ€” Full-on-disc would compromise "the quality of the final chapter."
  • All three consoles โ€” The hybrid physical SKU is coming to each major platform.
  • Collector backlash โ€” Fans wanted a true offline copy of the trilogy finale.

Rockstar and the IWGB open a fiery tribunal over 31 sacked GTA 6 staff

Source: EurogamerDate: September 11, 2026Impact: High

Rockstar Games and the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain traded opening statements in Glasgow in the final employment tribunal over 31 Rockstar North employees fired nearly a year ago. The case turns on a private IWGB Discord where staff hoped to organize a legally recognized union, and where Rockstar alleged confidential information was disclosed.

The IWGB says Rockstar was "clandestinely monitoring" the server through a "mole" since at least February 2024, but only took punitive action days after membership hit the 10 percent threshold UK law uses for union recognition. Rockstar's opening line was that "it would have been insanity to take no action," and that the union's case is "literally incredible." The hearing is the most public window yet into how Rockstar polices internal talk in the run-up to GTA 6.

Key Points

  • 31 staff โ€” Fired from Rockstar North almost a year ago.
  • Discord at the center โ€” Organizing server vs alleged leaks of confidential information.
  • 10% threshold โ€” Union claims the firings landed just after recognition numbers were hit.
  • Glasgow hearing โ€” Opening statements now on the record via Eurogamer.

JOB ยท STUDIO CLOSURE

Moss developer Polyarc shuts down after nearly 12 years

Source: IGNDate: September 11, 2026Impact: High

Seattle VR studio Polyarc, best known for Moss and Moss: Book II, announced it is closing. "After nearly 12 years riding the joyous rollercoaster of emotions that is making video games, our time together has come to an end," the studio wrote on LinkedIn. "Thank you to everyone at Polyarc, our work is now finished." A reverse-recruiting spreadsheet listed 29 employees, including the co-founders.

Polyarc shipped Moss: The Forgotten Relic, a non-VR compilation, in July, months after a March layoff round that followed the cancellation of a major project and a failed funding search. Founded in 2015 by former Bungie staff, the studio was one of the few VR specialists to land both critical love and multi-platform ports, including Apple Vision Pro's Glassbreakers. It was not enough. Another well-liked mid-size studio exits in the same week a new shooter sells a million copies before the servers even stabilize.

Key Points

  • 12-year run over โ€” Closure announced September 11 via LinkedIn.
  • 29 staff listed โ€” Reverse recruiting sheet includes the three co-founders.
  • March warning โ€” Layoffs after a cancelled project and missed funding.
  • Forgotten Relic in July โ€” The flatscreen compilation was not a second act.

European studios spent 63% more on external talent in 2025

Source: GamesIndustry.bizDate: September 11, 2026Impact: Medium

European studios increased spending on external roles by 63% in 2025, ahead of a 55% global rise, according to the Talent Signals Reshaping the Games Industry report from Values Value founder Tanja Loktionova. Freelancer headcount at European studios grew 24%, and average freelancer income rose 19% globally โ€” even as 63% of freelancers remain worried about income stability.

The mismatch is ugly: nearly 60% of studios say they cannot find qualified specialists, while 54% of freelancers struggle to find the right projects. Thirty percent of survey respondents were laid off in the past year, and it typically takes six months to land the next role. Only 26% felt they were growing professionally. Loktionova called it "a structural signal that the industry has matured past its growth-at-any-cost phase and has not yet figured out what replaces it."

Key Points

  • +63% external spend โ€” Europe outpaced the 55% global increase.
  • 24% more freelancers โ€” Studios are buying flexibility instead of headcount.
  • Still a mismatch โ€” Studios cannot find specialists; freelancers cannot find projects.
  • Six-month job hunt โ€” 30% of respondents were laid off in the last year.

Saber Interactive says it has "no real development in North America any more"

Source: PC GamerDate: September 11, 2026Impact: Medium

Saber Interactive chief creative officer Tim Willits said the company has "no real development in North America any more." Headquarters and publishing remain in the United States, but game-making now sits across 15 studios in Serbia, Armenia, Georgia, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Argentina, Australia, and elsewhere. "Companies need to be smart about where you make your game," he said.

The geography is a leftover of the 2024 Embracer split. Aspyr, Demiurge, Tripwire, and Beamdog stayed with Embracer; Shiver was sold to Nintendo. Saber still owns New World Interactive in Denver and Calgary, which shipped a major Insurgency: Sandstorm update in May. Willits's broader point โ€” that some publishers are "afraid to work in territories they don't understand" โ€” is the quiet version of a trend the employment survey made loud: production is moving to where the hourly rate still works.

Key Points

  • 15 studios worldwide โ€” US HQ remains; development does not.
  • Post-Embracer map โ€” Several former US labels stayed with Embracer or Nintendo.
  • New World still in NA โ€” Denver and Calgary are the exception, not the model.
  • "Smart about where" โ€” Willits is openly treating location as a cost and talent strategy.

GTA 6's Netflix preview drove more than 100,000 sign-ups in six hours

Source: GamesIndustry.bizDate: September 10, 2026Impact: Medium

Rockstar's extended GTA 6 look on Netflix generated more than 100,000 US sign-ups during a six-hour exclusivity window on August 27, the platform's third-largest subscriber spike of 2026, according to Ampere Analysis. Only the Stranger Things finale and the Rousey vs. Carano MMA fight drew a bigger one-day jump. More than 5% of viewers who had not used Netflix in 30 days came back for the preview โ€” a reactivation rate Ampere said beat any series or film in the period.

The extended look reached 31.1 million Netflix views in four days. Sensor Tower saw US mobile viewership jump 35% hour-over-hour and web traffic 125%. In the UK, Nielsen IQ recorded PlayStation and Xbox hardware sales up 33% and 34% after the premiere. Netflix's games division still lives on mobile, but the GTA 6 window showed the streamer can rent AAA attention even when it is not the one shipping the game.

Key Points

  • 100,000+ US sign-ups โ€” In a six-hour exclusive window.
  • Third-largest spike of 2026 โ€” Behind Stranger Things and a live fight.
  • 31.1M views in four days โ€” Plus a measurable hardware bounce in the UK.
  • Lapsed users returned โ€” Over 5% of 30-day inactives came back for the preview.

Nintendo of America answers tariff refunds with a Customer Appreciation Sale

Source: EurogamerDate: September 10, 2026Impact: Medium

Nintendo of America launched a Customer Appreciation Sale โ€” one of its "largest promotions ever" โ€” and tied it to tariff refunds the company received after raising US prices last year. "While Nintendo absorbed most tariff-related costs, the refunds helped make promotions like this one possible," the company wrote. The US sale begins September 12 and is slated to run about two weeks.

The timing is awkward. Nintendo is facing a class action for not passing those refunds on to customers who paid the higher prices. The company says it absorbed most of the tariff hit; shoppers who bought Switch 2 hardware and first-party games at the marked-up rate got no rebate, and are now being thanked with a discount on more Nintendo products. A sale is still a sale. It is also a reminder that the tariff fight did not end when the refund check arrived.

Key Points

  • Starts today in the US โ€” Roughly two weeks, framed as a thank-you promotion.
  • Refunds funded it โ€” Nintendo says tariff rebates helped make the sale possible.
  • Class action pending โ€” Shoppers argue those refunds should have gone back to them.
  • "Absorbed most costs" โ€” Nintendo's line, contested by the people who paid the new prices.
